Looker Studio Dashboards Connected to GA4, Google Ads and BigQuery

Looker Studio, formerly Google Data Studio

Looker Studio is Google's dashboarding tool; until 2022 it was called Google Data Studio. It is free, shared like any Google document, and has built-in connectors for GA4, Google Ads, Search Console, Google Sheets and BigQuery. That is why it is usually a marketing team's first dashboard.

It is also why it tends to grow without a plan. One report connects straight to GA4, another to Google Ads, another to a spreadsheet someone updates by hand. Over time the familiar symptoms appear: charts that take ages to load, GA4 API quota errors when several people open the report at once, calculated fields copied between reports with small differences, and a conversion number that never matches the CRM.

As your Looker Studio consultant, our job is to turn that dashboard back into something the team opens every Monday and trusts.

What we do with your Looker Studio dashboards

Data prepared in BigQuery
Instead of wiring every chart to GA4 or Google Ads, the report reads tables already prepared in BigQuery. It loads faster, avoids API quotas and every page shows the same numbers.
Metrics defined once
Conversions, cost per lead and return on ad spend are calculated in the data model, not in calculated fields repeated across reports.
Marketing and sales together
We join campaigns with CRM opportunities and revenue, so you see which spend turns into business, not just clicks.
Designed for decision-makers
One page per question, date and channel filters that work across the whole report, and no endless tables.
Access and ownership
We sort out who edits and who views, and how data sources connect: with the owner's or the viewer's credentials, so BigQuery permissions are respected.
BigQuery spend in check
We tune caching and data freshness for each source, so opening a dashboard doesn't trigger unnecessary queries.

When Looker Studio is not enough

Looker Studio works well for marketing dashboards built on Google sources with a reasonable number of users. It falls short when:

  • You need a data model with relationships across many tables and governed, company-wide metrics. Looker Studio can blend data sources, but it has no semantic layer like Looker's or a Power BI model.
  • Each sales rep must see only their own accounts, maintained for a lot of people. BigQuery permissions cover part of it, but Power BI and Looker are built for it.
  • Your company runs on Microsoft 365 and other departments already use Power BI.
  • Reports have become the place where complex calculations happen, rather than the place where people look at data.

In those cases we recommend Looker (Google's enterprise BI platform, with LookML to define the data model) or Power BI. If your data is already well prepared in BigQuery, switching tools is far easier, because the heavy lifting isn't in the dashboard.

How we build Looker Studio (Google Data Studio) dashboards

  1. 1
    Questions and metrics
We list the decisions the report supports and the metric each one needs, with its definition.
  2. 2
    Sources into BigQuery
GA4, Google Ads and your other sources go into BigQuery, and we prepare the tables the report will read.
  3. 3
    Prototype on real data
We build a first version and review it with you before polishing the design.
  4. 4
    Launch and adoption
We set permissions, schedule email delivery for whoever needs it, and check after a few weeks which pages get used and which can go.

Looker Studio FAQ

Are Looker Studio and Data Studio the same thing?

Yes. Google renamed Data Studio to Looker Studio in 2022, and existing reports kept working under the new name.

What is the difference between Looker Studio and Looker?

Looker Studio is the free, easy-to-share dashboarding tool. Looker is Google's enterprise BI platform, with a central data model defined in LookML.

Why is my Looker Studio dashboard slow or showing GA4 errors?

Usually because each chart queries the GA4 API separately and quotas run out. Routing the data through BigQuery fixes it in most cases.

Can Looker Studio connect to HubSpot or Meta Ads?

Yes, through third-party connectors. We prefer to load that data into BigQuery and connect the report there, so every page comes from the same source.
